Leading Beyond a Single Story: Lessons in enacting a culturally responsive social studies program in Fort Worth ISD

What is the story of culture and history students learn in our schools? Who informs that story? What are the implications of that story on students whose history and cultural has been traditionally left out?  How can a social studies program be designed to create a more equitable experience for students?  This session will explore these questions as well as share about ongoing work to build a first-of-its-kind culturally repsonsive social studies program.  A program where students engage in a curriculum that goes beyond the single story told through the state level standards alone.  A curriculum that enhances students understanding of their genuine selves while empowering them to be future stewards of human progress.

Program elements featured as part of this session include:

-expanding and reinforcing ethnic studies courses first initiated by the district in SY 2013-14;
-designing and developing a K-12 African and African-American History and Culture Overlay/Infusion Curriculum;
-developing professional learning opportunities;
-future plans for a K-12 Latino(a) American Studies History and Culture Overlay/Infusion Curriculum.

Restorative Practices: Relate, Resolve & Restore
The Restorative Practices implementation process can be overwhelming. This presentation will introduce, unveil, examine, and explore the challenges and successes of implementing Restorative Practices. Our objective is to break down the barriers, empower participants, and encourage individuals, by embracing the "Why" and "What" associated with Restorative Practices. The audience will gain a familiarity with a holistic/philosophical approach to building relationships through trust, supporting inclusion, and promoting the effective resolution of conflict. We will begin by addressing the planning and preparation, expectations and resistance, implementation and training needs, and evaluation of the Restorative Practices culture.
