Racial Equity Summit

This presentation will focus on how one Parent Teacher Association worked to build more democratic parental participation in our urban public school.  Through a process of collaborative inquiry and action, we learned that we needed to engage in critical self-reflection, build relationships across difference, identify the conditions necessary for participation, recruit more representative leaders, and collectively advocate for our children’s education. 

Advancing Racial Justice through School Board Leadership: What should our school boards be doing to invest in our students of color? How can our local school boards contribute to advancing racial equity for all of our students? What is our role in ensuring that our governance structures focus on equity? Join us to explore these questions and more and learn how we can promote success for students through a racial justice lens. 

Our UV4C project was designed to create awareness of the many different cultures represented on our campus and to help students and teachers understand and embrace the cultural diversity at Southwest High School.  The ultimate of the Cultural Diversity Week was to prevent stereotypes through awareness and understanding that “Different is not better or worse – it’s just different!”We illuminated the different cultures that are hidden in the school.  We, as UV4C, let diverse people embrace their differences.  The school was involved with the different days of the week.  We celebrated living location and origin of our students.

Reclaiming TX Public Education: You are invited to a shared conversation with other students, parents, and teachers at a moment when The Secretary of Education, The Texas Governor, TEA, and Texas School Districts can do more to support public schools with much needed funding, and we face a growing emphasis on high stakes testing. Please attend to learn more about what others in Texas have done, and are currently involved with to advocate for public education.

To help individuals to become aware of their cultural bias and use classroom diversity in order to create cultural relevant lessons that will ensure all student success. 

This presentation will educate and inspire stakeholders to build positive communities for today's children and future generations through youth empowerment.
